Living in San Antonio
First discovered by Spanish explorers in 1691, San Antonio has grown up as an important cultural center in the heart of Texas. Presently the 8th largest city in the United States, the city's thriving metropolitan culture reflects the spirits of Old Mexico, Native Americans and a touch of the American West.
For potential residents, San Antonio is a jewel in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, and the home of an ever-growing number of things to do, see and experience.
Excitement is never hard to find, as San Antonio offers a wide variety of unique, year-round entertainment opportunities. The most famous, and foremost among its urban landmarks, is the Riverwalk. Located at the heart of the city, the Riverwalk contains a little bit of everything. By day, the 2.5 mile stretch of cobblestone plays host to a beautiful nature center, European-style sidewalk cafes and a number of excellent boutiques. By night, it dominates the party scene with hot music, performance art and plenty of clubs.
For those craving a little bit more action, San Antonio does not disappoint. Home of Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Sea World, a number of natural caverns and a short drive from Schlitterbahn Waterpark, there are plenty of ways to spend an afternoon.
Fans of theatre and music can choose from a number of local hotspots - such as the Alameda, Lila Cockrell or Majestic Theatres - or more mainstream events held at the Alamodome or the newly opened Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre.
The city also boasts professional basketball through the 3-time NBA Champions, the San Antonio Spurs and the WNBA's Silver Stars, as well as minor-pro baseball (the Missions) and hockey (the Rampage) franchises. Fans of college athletics should also consider the Alamo-Bowl or look slightly northwards to the University of Texas at Austin - barely an hour from the southernmost point of the city.
Residents will also be able to experience a number of yearly festivals and celebrations. The city's strong Hispanic roots are displayed proudly for Cinco De Mayo and the unique Fiesta de las Luminarias. Held over nine nights during December, the Fiesta de las Luminarias sees the Riverwalk lined with over 7,000 beautiful candles, meant to light Mary and Joseph's path as they search for shelter on the night of Jesus' birth.
There are also a number of important secular holidays, including New Year's Eve and the 10-day Fiesta. Held in April, the Fiesta is a celebration of Texas Independence, honoring those who fought in the Battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto. The highlight of the festival is the Flowers Parade, a procession of floats that occurs on the waters of the San Antonio River, right down the Riverwalk.
No matter the taste, or the time of year, San Antonio is a thriving community offering plenty of excitement, culture and history. A great place for singles, or to raise a family, San Antonio is a wonderful place to call home.
